About Steve Fischmann

What many don’t know is Steve’s personal background and how he came to be such a strong and effective advocate for the people of Southern New Mexico.

When Steve and his wife Sandy retired from Levi-Strauss a few years ago, they wanted to live in a place where people still mattered, and where they could play a positive role in the world around them. Soon after settling in southern New Mexico, Steve became active in the community, starting as a volunteer with various local organizations. As he became more involved in area activities, his business training began to be more and more relevant. After years spent in financial and contract analysis, he began to see that state and local governments were entering into agreements that were detrimental to citizen and taxpayer interests.

One of the first issues that brought Steve to public attention was his analysis of the pending 25-year franchise agreement between the City of Las Cruces and El Paso Electric. It didn’t take long for Steve to realize that the terms were extremely unfavorable to the city, and that it made little sense, in a dynamic energy environment, to sign a long-term agreement with a single provider. Thanks to Steve’s efforts, the City exercised a two-year option to postpone renewal of the agreement until the terms could be more fully understood and improved.

Steve was also the person who brought to public attention the large Vistas at Presidio project that was moving quietly toward approval, pointing out the implications a project that size would have on the entire city. In the process, the lack of public participation in important public decisions was highlighted, and the advantages of planning for future development came to the fore. This, too, brought needed change to the city.

Over time, more and more people began to feel very fortunate that Steve and Sandy had come to our community, and they began to urge him to seek public office. Last spring Steve announced his candidacy for State Senate in District 37. Now voters in eastern Doña Ana County and southern Sierra County have the chance to bring his same experience, thoughtfulness, and ability to find common ground to our legislative delegation.

Please attend one of Steve’s houseparties, or call him to make an appointment to talk. Then you too can see why we need him representing us in Santa Fe.
